Pickleball in Newton, Massachusetts

Newton runs one of the more structured municipal pickleball programs west of Boston. McGrath Courts anchors the May-through-October outdoor season, Auburndale Cove offers a lower-cost self-led block, and the Cooper Center supplies indoor play plus skill-based lessons.

McGrath Courts

McGrath Courts, 1600 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02465, has three courts reserved for city pickleball programs during the May 1 through October 31 season. Staffed drop-in play runs Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m., plus Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to dusk. Entry is $5 through a punch card: $25 for five plays or $50 for ten.

Auburndale Cove

Auburndale Cove, 99 West Pine Street, Auburndale, MA 02466, has four outdoor pickleball courts. The city runs self-led Pickleball Playtime from 10 a.m. to noon. Quarterly registration is $20 for Newton residents and $25 for nonresidents, and the courts use portable nets.

Cooper Center

Cooper Center for Active Living, 345 Walnut Street, Newtonville, MA 02460, hosts indoor drop-in pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 4 p.m. A city punch card is required. This is Newton's clearest weather-proof option and also the main site for current adult lesson sessions.

Lessons and Beginner Play

Newton offers beginner, lower-intermediate, and advanced-intermediate instruction indoors and outdoors. Current September and October 2026 Cooper Center sessions include three-week Tuesday classes for $75 and three-week Wednesday classes for $94; most are designed for adults age 45 and older. Registration is through Newton Parks and Recreation. Players who need another time or private instruction can use the Coaches section.

Open Play, Leagues, and Events

McGrath is the center of Newton's organized outdoor scene. In addition to staffed drop-in blocks, public walk-on time runs Monday 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday 11:30 a.m. to dusk, Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., all day Friday and Sunday, and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to dusk. Monday evenings are reserved for lessons. Organized or recurring group use requires a city permit.

Visitor Planning

Visitors who want a ready-made game should choose a staffed McGrath drop-in block and buy a punch card in advance at the Parks and Recreation office, 246 Dudley Road; cash is not accepted at the courts. Auburndale Cove is better for a prearranged group with a portable net, while Cooper Center is the indoor choice on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. McGrath's public walk-on windows are useful for casual games, but they do not supply partners or staffed rotation.
